DTZ has an immediate opening for a Safety Specialist in Eddyville, IA.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors. May conduct inspections and enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals.
Team member must be able to work in a team oriented and safety conscious environment. Safety First expectations include, but are not limited to, PJHA process, Observation process, and compliance with all company / site safety guidelines and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND
Responsibilities:
Identify hazardous conditions and practices
Identify potential hazards in existing equipment, machinery, facilities, or processes
Develop methods to predict hazards from experience, historical data, and other information sources
Develops and help enforce a plan to eliminate hazards, conducting training sessions for management, supervisors, and workers on health and safety practices and regulations, as necessary
Inspect and test machinery and equipment, such as lifting devices, machine shields, or scaffolding, to ensure they meet appropriate safety regulations
Check that personal protective equipment is being used in workplaces according to regulations.
Check that dangerous materials are stored correctly
Test and identify work areas for potential accident and health hazards, such as toxic fumes and explosive gas-air mixtures, and implement appropriate control measures, such as adjustments to ventilation systems
Communicate with workers and observe their work, as well as inspect the elements of their work environment, such as lighting, tools, and equipment
Prepare and calibrate scientific equipment in order to measure and control hazardous substances, or conditions such as noise or radiation levels
If an accident occurs, investigate unsafe working conditions, study possible causes, and recommend remedial action
Supports the Safety Manager or actually manages the Case Management of occupational injuries
Report to management on the status of occupational health and safety programs
Has the ability to fill in for the Safety Manager in times of need
Consultation with engineers or physicians also may be required
Analyzes data and prepares reports for Health and Safety Metrics to include: Site Scorecard, Observations & Behaviors, uses the data to provide Leading & Lagging Indicators Reports
Develops occupational health and safety systems; including policies, procedures, and manuals
Expectation of task completion to range from task completion with direct supervision to task completion without supervision, dependent upon assigned tasks and employee's development. This position requires the employee to work independent of supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND

Responsibilities also include documenting safety inspections, citing dangerous areas/procedures and recommending corrective procedures, and maintaining safety equipment supply and availability
Perform daily safety Observations. Counsel employees that do not meet expectations to ensure that they understand the importance of working safely and proper PPE usage
Order suspension of activities that pose threats to workers health and safety
Manages safety training and education programs; demonstrate the use of safety equipment
Facilitates new employee health and safety orientations and manages/develops the material for theses training classes
Employee will perform any and all other relevant duties assigned to this position by the responsible manager
PERSONAL PERFORMANCE GOALS:
Achieve performance expectations set forth as part of performance appraisals to include employee development planning
Goals will be listed as part of annual performance evaluation and future objectives
Continually develop skills by pursuing further education, seminars, or certificate programs in Safety
Comply with UGL Unicco and Cargill policies
Communication with all team members to support the development of short and long range planning in support of the company's goals and objectives
Meet physical requirements of the job
Perform assigned tasks in a safe, effective, and efficient manner
Accurate and timely administrative duties to include, but not limited to, time accounting and work order completion
